Species- and site-specific efficacy of commercial biocides and application solvents against lichens

2017

Abstract Control of lichens on stone cultural heritage is mostly achieved by a combination of mechanical removal with biocide applications. However, there is a lack of scientific evidence on the efficacy of different biocides on different species, and on the consistency of biocide effects on heritage sites in different environmental conditions. This results in some uncertainty when conservation interventions to control lichens are routinely defined on the basis of restoration tradition or empirical evaluation, without experimental measures of how lichens respond. In this work, we quantitatively evaluated (a) the efficacy of five commercially-available biocides, applied using a brush or with…

The effect of organic solvents on selected microorganisms and model liposome membrane

2019

The effect of methanol, ethanol, acetone, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethyl sulfoxide and Nujol on the growth of Escherichia coli DH5α, Bacillus subtilis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae D273 was investigated. All of the tested cultures appeared susceptible to the organic media they were treated with, which evinced in apparent hindering of cell development. The observed diverse solvent tolerance, except from their different biochemical activity, may also be related to the changes in cell membrane fluidity induced by the solvent species. Parallel electron paramagnetic resonance investigations using egg yolk lecithin model liposomes revealed that the fluidity of the phospholipid system in cel…

Peak half-width plots to study the effect of organic solvents on the peak performance of basic drugs in micellar liquid chromatography.

2009

The addition of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) to hydro-organic mixtures of methanol, ethanol, propanol or acetonitrile with water yielded enhanced peak shape (i.e. increased efficiencies and symmetrical peaks) for a group of basic drugs (β-blockers) chromatographed with a Kromasil C18 column. The effect can be explained by the thin layer of surfactant associated to the hydrocarbon chain on the stationary phase in the presence of the organic solvents, which covers the free silanols on the siliceous support avoiding their interaction with the cationic basic drugs. These instead interact with the anionic head of the surfactant increasing their retention and allowing a mo…

DNA single strand break analysis in mononuclear blood cells of petrol pump attendants

1995

DNA single strand breaks, including DNA adducts that lead to alkali-labile sites, were measured in peripheral mononuclear blood cells of 35 petrol pump attendants by alkaline filter elution. Blood samples from petrol pump attendants were taken on Monday and Friday. Additionally, DNA single strand breaks of smoking and non-smoking control persons were examined. For the smoking (n = 12) and the non-smoking controls (n = 20) a mean normalized elution rate of 1.49 +/- 0.52 (mean value +/- 95% confidence interval) and 1.32 +/- 0.28, respectively, was obtained. The difference between smoking and non-smoking controls was not statistically significant (U test). An increase in DNA single strand brea…

Blue-yellow deficiency in workers exposed to low concentrations of organic solvents

1997

Objectives: To evaluate the effects of low concentrations of organic solvents on color vision. Methods: Color vision was examined in 24 workers exposed to mixtures of solvents and in 24 control subjects. Exposure to mixtures was below the threshold-limit values. Color vision ability was assessed using the Ishihara plates (to screen for congenital dyschromatopsia), the Farnsworth panel D-15 test, the Lanthony desaturated panel D-15 test, and the Standard Pseudoisochromatic Plates part 2 (SPP2 test). Results: The comparatively less sensitive Farnsworth panel D-15 test failed to show any difference between the groups, but the Lanthony panel D-15 desaturated test as well as the SPP2 test showed…

Optimisation of gradient elution with serially-coupled columns. Part I: single linear gradients.

2014

A mixture of compounds often cannot be resolved with a single chromatographic column, but the analysis can be successful using columns of different nature, serially combined through zero-dead volume junctions. In previous work (JCA 1281 (2013) 94), we developed an isocratic approach that optimised simultaneously the mobile phase composition, stationary phase nature and column length. In this work, we take the challenge of implementing optimal linear gradients for serial columns to decrease the analysis time for compounds covering a wide polarity range. For this purpose, five ACE columns of different selectivity (three C18 columns of different characteristics, a cyano and a phenyl column) we…

Violurato complexes of nickel(II). Formation equilibria. Deprotonation equilibria of the coordinated ligands and related stereochemical changes

1986

The formation equilibria of nickel(II) violurato-complexes in water and dimethylsulphoxide-water (80∶20) as well as deprotonation of the coordinated ligands and related stereochemical changes are reported. The stability constants of the Ni2+-H2V− complexes logβ1=5.06, Iogβ2=9.38, logβ3=12.98 as well as the acidity constants of the [Ni(H2V)3]− complex, logβj1= 8.37, logβj2=15.76, logβj3=22.37 are determined at 25 °C and 0.1M NaClO4. A new violurato-complex of Ni2+, Na4[Ni(HV)3]5H2O, is isolated and characterized.

Biocatalysis and biorecognition in nonaqueous media. Some perspectives in analytical biochemistry

1995

Biocatalysis and, to a lesser extent, biorecognition in non-aqueous media (including organic solvents as well as supercritical fluids and gases) constitute at present an exciting research area which has already demonstrated its biotechnological potential in numerous, varied applications. Less attention, however, has been paid to its analytical possibilities, even though many advantages have been postulated and a wide range of poorly water-soluble analytes are present in samples (or waste materials) from food and drink, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, military and other industries. The main approaches, developed in recent years to exploit the use of enzymes, antibodies or antibody mimics in w…

Calculation of organic solvent–water partition coefficients of iron–sulfur protein models

2002

Abstract A method is presented that permits semiquantitative estimation of the partitioning of many solutes between many pairs of media. As an example, the organic solvent–water partition coefficients P are calculated. The only needed parameters are the dielectric constant and molecular volume of the organic solvent. Fe 4 S 4 Cys n models of high-potential FeS proteins are studied. The Gibbs free energies of solvation and partition coefficients for Fe 4 S 4 Cys n are calculated. The organic solvent–water partition coefficients for 1-octanol P o , cyclohexane P ch and chloroform P cf decrease 4.41, 6.22 and 4.60 log units per cysteine (Cys) ligand, respectively. P o results are compared with…
